How can you become a naturalized U.S. citizen?

As an immigrant, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen can be a remarkable step toward realizing the American Dream. It can provide you the rights, opportunities and freedoms to pursue your goals and build a better future for you and your family.

To apply for naturalization, you must meet certain requirements. You must be at least 18 years old and have been a permanent resident in the U.S. for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen). You must also be able to read, write and speak basic English (unless an exception to your situation applies), and have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government.

The naturalization process explained

The first step is to file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Along with the form, you’ll need to submit supporting documents, such as your green card, tax returns and any other requested evidence. You will then be scheduled for a biometrics appointment where your fingerprints, photo and signature will be taken. These will be used to conduct criminal background checks to ensure your eligibility for naturalization.

Should your application sail through, you’ll be scheduled for an interview with a USCIS officer. Expect questions about your application and your eligibility for naturalization. You’ll also take an English and civics test unless you qualify for an exemption. If all goes well, you will attend a naturalization ceremony. Here, you will take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and receive your Certificate of Naturalization, officially making you a U.S. citizen.

Not all applications are successful

It’s worth noting that the naturalization process is not always smooth sailing. Mistakes or misunderstandings could considerably delay or jeopardize your application. Seeking legal guidance before embarking on this crucial journey can significantly increase your chances of a successful application.
