Louisville Naturalization Lawyers
Serving Lexington, Paducah And All Of Kentucky
Witnessing a client becoming an American citizen is one of the most gratifying experiences an immigration lawyer can have. We at Vickerstaff Law Office, PSC, in Louisville, are pleased to have witnessed this great event time and again.
We know that attaining citizenship is a major goal for many immigrants, and we are grateful for having the opportunity to play a supporting role in the achievement.
How Naturalization Works
If you are over 18 years old and want to become a U.S. citizen, you will have to go through the process of naturalization. To apply, you must qualify in at least one of the following ways:
- You have U.S. permanent residency (proven with a green card) and have lived in the United States for five years.
- Or: you are married to a U.S. citizen and have been a permanent resident (based on marriage to the same U.S. citizen) for at least three years.
- Or: you are a permanent resident and have served in the United States Armed Forces.
If you qualify in any of these ways, you must then prove that you have sufficient knowledge of U.S. history and government. Likewise, you must show that you can speak, read and write in English. (These requirements can sometimes be waived for certain applicants who are elderly or have certain mental disabilities.)
It is a lengthy process requiring real work on your part. Some cases are easier than others. But everyone can benefit from the counsel of a skilled Kentucky immigration attorney like John Vickerstaff or Marina Finegold. We have worked with every kind of immigrant from every part of the world, from global corporations to refugee camps. We would be honored to help you.
