Immigration scams to avoid

On Behalf of | Oct 5, 2023 | immigration law

It’s always been your dream to live in the United States. You have family there and plans are in motion to join them on a permanent basis. The U.S. is known as the land of the free, and over 1 million people immigrate there every year. That being said, the immigration process isn’t always easy to navigate.

Sadly, scammers also target immigrants seeking to move to the country. What are some of the more common immigration scams to be wary of?

Unofficial websites

Most of the information and forms that you need can be found on official government websites. There really is no need to gather information elsewhere. Unfortunately, some scammers entice immigrants to their websites in order to charge fees to guarantee a successful application.

The problem is that these scammers aren’t in a position to offer these services. Scammers may claim that they can process your application for a one-off fee, or provide you with the forms you require at a cost. It’s important that you carefully assess the authenticity of a site before making a payment.

Inauthentic legal guidance

Legal guidance can be expensive and hard to find sometimes. Some scammers pose as attorneys. They will claim that they are accredited and can help you with your immigration application. Nonetheless, they are not authorized to do so and chances are they don’t really know the law.

Ideally, you’ll want to get your immigration application right the first time. This will not only help you achieve your desired status, but it will ensure that you hold on to it. Seek legal guidance to find out more about your options.
