What could you be asked in a green card marriage interview?

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2026 | family immigration

One of the ways that immigrants to this country can obtain a green card is by marrying a U.S. citizen. For that to happen, you’ll need to be in a genuine relationship with someone who is a citizen. Arranging a marriage with someone just to get a green card would be considered fraudulent, and you could both face prosecution over it.

The immigration authorities will likely want to interview you to make sure that your motives for marriage are genuine. Here are some questions you might expect.

Questions about each other

Seemingly mundane questions about each other’s dietary preferences – even things like what they put in their coffee – are common. Questions like these can help officials to assess whether two people who say they are a couple really are.

It’s even possible that the interviewer might intentionally suggest wrong information to see whether you will call it out. For instance, they might suggest that your partner is a vegetarian when they know they aren’t to see if you correct them.

Questions about your time together

The interviewing official might ask you who sleeps on which side of the bed, where you first met or where you went for your first date. They may ask some such questions to check the other person’s reaction to your answers, or to compare the answers you give.

If your relationship is genuine, the answers should come naturally to you. However, if you don’t know or remember something, it’s best to be honest than to make something up.

Learning more about the process can help you understand all the necessary steps applying for a green card via marriage will involve. Having legal guidance can be valuable.
