Can the USCIS accommodate medical issues during naturalization?

People who have legally lived in the United States for years can generally work to become citizens. The naturalization process allows an immigrant an opportunity to become a citizen.

After naturalization, immigrants can vote and may even be able to run for certain political offices. They also have more immigration opportunities to share with their family members. Naturalization requires paperwork and an interview conducted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

An immigrant hoping to become a citizen must answer questions about themselves and also pass two tests. Can those with challenging medical conditions ask the USCIS for testing accommodations?

Some accommodations are available

The USCIS has an obligation to treat immigrants equally, regardless of their medical conditions. As such, there are a variety of testing accommodations and exemptions available. Older immigrants who have legally remained in the United States for multiple years sometimes qualify for English language testing exemptions.

There are also a variety of accommodations available to those with medical limitations. Those accommodations can help people overcome the challenges imposed by their medical conditions. The USCIS does offer a variety of testing accommodations to those with documented medical need.

However, the USCIS has announced greater scrutiny for accommodation requests beginning in late 2025. As such, those in need of accommodations to make testing reasonably fair may need to gather medical documentation and secure support as they begin the naturalization process.

Working with an immigration attorney while seeking naturalized citizenship can reduce the likelihood of complications derailing the process. Those who are navigating special circumstances, including those in need of accommodations, may find that securing legal guidance increases their chances of success.
