Ins and outs of applying for a work visa

On Behalf of | Jun 24, 2022 | blog, immigration law

A work visa is a document that allows people coming from another country to work in the United States. This generally applies to work you receive payment for, but may also pertain to volunteer work or services provided via an unpaid internship. If you are moving to Kentucky for work, and are new to the United States, obtaining a work visa is essential.

Although specific steps depend on individual circumstances, here are a few of the general ins and outs of applying for a work visa in the United States.

Securing a job offer

People generally need to have an employment offer before applying for a work visa. You and your future employer should have already discussed the terms of your sponsorship. Some work visas are specific to a certain job, which means that the visa holder may be ineligible to obtain employment in another field once they are in the United States.

Completing an application

The next step is usually to fill out an application. This form will ask you questions about your contact information and future employer, among other things. Make sure to have all of your documentation in order before starting the application. A limited number of countries allow their residents to fill out a visa application online; otherwise, you will need to submit the form in person.

Keep in mind that the processing times for work visas can be quite lengthy, as long as six to seven months, so plan ahead.

Knowing how to apply for an employment visa will make the process go much more smoothly.
