How can you prepare for a green card marriage interview?

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2025 | immigration law

One way that people can get a green card to become a permanent resident in the United States is by getting married. Perhaps you initially immigrated to the United States on a work visa or a student visa. You then met a citizen, fell in love and got married, so now you want to get a green card so that you can stay in the United States.

If you take this route, you may have to attend a green card marriage interview. Is there any way that you can prepare in advance for this interview to ensure that you pass and get the green card that you need?

Proving a legitimate relationship

There are some things you can do to prepare, as the government wants to see that you have a legitimate relationship and are living together. Certain types of documentation can help, such as mail being sent to the same address or paychecks being deposited into the same bank account. This type of documentation helps to show that you are really a couple and that you are not just pretending to be one in order to get a green card.

But much of the interview may simply be the interviewer asking you about your daily life. They want to know about your home life, your habits and details of your personal relationship. They could ask you when you met, where you went on a first date or what you like to do on the weekends. For questions like these, there is nothing you can really do to prepare, as the interviewer is simply looking for similar answers that indicate that the two of you know each other and are engaged in a romantic relationship.

If you are in the process of getting a green card or considering doing so in the near future, it is crucial that you understand all of your legal options at this time.
