What are the categories for green card eligibility?

There are many ways you can qualify to get a green card. Having this document enables you to live in the United States without fear of being deported from your home in Kentucky. However, to qualify, you do have to meet some specific requirements and fall into one of the qualified categories.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services explains that one of the easiest ways to qualify for a green card is to fit into the family category. This would mean that you are a relative of a citizen. You do have to be a close relative and age limits may apply in some situations.

Employment may also qualify you. You may be able to get a green card if you are an immigrant worker, a physician or an investor. Other occupations that may qualify you include religious worker, Afghan or Iraqi translator, member of the media or an employee of certain international organizations.

Certain violent or dangerous situations in your home country may also allow you to get a green card. For example, you may qualify if you are a refugee or if you are seeking asylum. Victims of abuse, human trafficking or other crimes may also fall into this category.

It is also possible to get one through the diversity visa lottery or if you have lived in the country continuously since January 1, 1972. There are a few other categories, such as Cuban natives, foreign diplomats and paroled individuals that if they meet specific requirements can also qualify for a green card.
