Louisville techies fighting immigration enforcement efforts

From Louisville to New York City and from Silicon Valley to Texas, Florida and beyond, there is a grassroots effort by technology firms eager to help people resist President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts. According to The Atlantic’s tech publication CityLab, techies here in Louisville are working hard to ensure that our city continues to welcome immigrants.

A University of Louisville professor helped organize a “hackathon” designed to give our immigrant community information about services and organizations such as family health centers, education institutions, transit, community ministries and more.

The professor and his students also created a Story Map of Louisville that gives introductory information about our city’s history and positions on immigration issues.

The coordinator of community partnership for the effort told CityLab that “we wanted to identify some folks in the community where we can meet their needs.”

A New York nonprofit is working on a website to help Muslim travelers. The goal is to enable legal aid organizations to monitor problems and send immigration attorneys to airports to assist travelers detained. Users will be able to register flight data and other information; if the user doesn’t send a confirmation text, the app will follow up and then alert the organization if a lawyer might be needed.

In some situations, experienced Kentucky immigration law attorneys can help secure a cancellation of removal, file an appeal with the BIA (Board of Immigration Appeals) or otherwise prevent deportation or detention.
