Russian immigration to U.S. remains high

On Behalf of | Apr 7, 2017 | immigration law

In the headlines, Russia and the United States seem forever at odds. While heads of state engage in conflict, working class people continue to pursue happiness in their everyday lives. Despite international differences, people are still free to travel between Russia and the U.S. and live as they choose. That sentiment remains high among Russian citizens wishing to emigrate to the U.S.

In 2015, approximately 250,000 Russians applied for U.S. green cards and visas respectively, according to Bloomberg and the State Department. The number of Russian citizens seeking U.S. visas remains at an all-time high, with twice as many applications received in 2015 compared to a decade ago.

The U.S. remains a boon to Russians seeking financial security and a better life, according to Bloomberg, yet not everyone who applies to enter the U.S. has the chance to do so. Green card applicants must enter a lottery system. Although 250,000 Russians applied for U.S. green card status in 2015, just 4,000 of the 100,000 slots available annually are guaranteed to its citizens.

With less than two percent of applicants approved for green cards in the U.S. each year, it is imperative that Russian hopefuls have their application in order. The odds can seem overwhelming, but emigrants are not without options. Applicants can improve their chances of approval by speaking to an immigration attorney.

Here are three scenarios that require professional legal assistance:

1. An application has been denied in the past

An attorney can help applicants understand the reason for a denial in the past. Immigration lawyers have in-depth knowledge of the law and how the government works. Speaking with an attorney can allow applicants greater insight into the application process and how to improve their future chances of acceptance.

2. Applicants plan to immigrate with family

Many people choose to emigrate as a way to better not only themselves but their family too. Children of immigrants are eligible for a green card after the age of 21. Their legal protections are critical to securing their future potential in the United States.

3. Visa or green card is based on employment

Access to the U.S. is often easier to obtain when based on a job. A potential employer may assist international employees with the visa or green card process, but that is not always the case. Failure to comply with visa or green card requirements could delay employment opportunities. Therefore, speaking with an immigration attorney can be a worthwhile investment in job prospects.

Russian immigration to the United States remains robust. Parties interested in traveling the U.S. should take advantage of the legal help available from an immigration attorney.
